How do you pave a driveway that runs across three garage doors?
You treat it as one surface, not two driveways that happen to touch. This home in The Villages has a double garage and a separate single bay, and the new paver driveway in The Villages runs the full width of both without a seam or a change in pattern.
Width changes the job. A narrow driveway hides small errors, but a wide one shows every wandering joint line from the street, so the layout gets snapped and checked before the field pavers go down. The blend here mixes tan, grey and a soft rose, which keeps a big flat area from reading as one heavy block of color.
Look at the right edge in this photo. The pavers stop cleanly at the lawn, and the curved rock bed with the lamp post sits right against them. Edges like that are where a wide driveway starts to fail if the base underneath was rushed. Can the driveway pavers continue into a front entry walkway?
Yes. On this house it is the detail that makes the whole front look planned. We carried the same paver around the corner of the garage and into a curved walkway that ends at the tall glass front door.
Using one blend for both keeps the eye moving from the street to the entry, past the garage doors and the lamp post, and straight to the front door where a visitor is actually headed. Switch products halfway and the walkway looks like an afterthought. The curve follows the rock bed, and the low path lights now sit beside a finished surface.
A walkway carries foot traffic, not cars. Even so, it gets the same staged compaction we use everywhere else: base compacted, limestone screenings compacted, then pavers set. Skip a step on a curve like this and the cut pieces along the outside edge are the first to drift. It is a small area. People notice it anyway, because everyone who visits walks across it. How thick should pavers be for a driveway?
Thick enough to carry a car. For a driveway we use vehicular rated pavers at 2 3/8 inches, set on a deeper and heavier base than a patio gets.
The thinner option is where homeowners get burned. Veneer pavers run about 1 1/4 inches, and the manufacturers rate them for foot traffic on patios and lanais. Some contractors lay them over an old concrete driveway anyway, because skipping the demolition and the new base makes the job quicker and the estimate cheaper than doing it the right way. It looks good for a while. Then the slab underneath moves, the veneer has nothing to flex with, and within a few years the pavers crack. There is no patch for that.
When a slab has to come out, the demolition is less dramatic than people expect. Breaking out an old concrete driveway and hauling it off typically takes us about half a day. After that we are building a proper base instead of covering up a problem. Every joint then gets Gator Maxx G2 polymeric sand, and we seal the surface. We bring current samples from Tremron pavers and other manufacturers to the consultation, so you can hold the actual driveway paver against your garage door.
Do you need ARC approval to replace a driveway in The Villages?
In most cases, yes. Driveway replacements are visible from the street, and the Architectural Review Committee reviews that kind of change before the work starts.
The committee tends to look at a few things. Does the paver color complement the house? Does the new driveway respect setbacks from the property line? Will water run toward a neighboring lot? On a wide driveway like this one, drainage deserves real attention, because there is a lot of hard surface shedding rain in one direction.
